Why Do Some Animals Live Longer Than Others?

We can see the evidence of this in our world all around us, especially if you are a pet owner that has lost a furry friend. 

Why is this the case? Does it have to do with the animals size?

We often observe that small insects have a much shorter lifespan than larger animals, which have a shorter lifespan than even larger animals. 

Unfortunately it is not as simple as that, because there are many animals that do not fit into this pattern.
