Why Do We Live Where We Live?

Have you ever wondered why our cities and towns are designed the way they are and why people live where they do within them? 

As it turns out, there are a multitude of reasons for the design and locations of our cities and their inhabitants, but there seems to be one thing that stands out when you examine the "big picture". 

By "big picture", I am talking about not just looking at the city and surrounding suburbs, but instead look at where people are living worldwide. 

Even though cities around the world seem to be designed very differently, they all are apparently designed around walking (or traveling) distances and the reasons for their differences have to do with time and technology.
