Why Are Some Peppers Spicy?

I don't know if it is because I am from the South or if it is just in my genes, but I have always loved to eat spicy foods. 

Stuffed jalapenos, nachos with jalapeno slices, salsa, hot sauce...it is all welcome on my menu. 

I have often wondered why these peppers evolved to have a spicy component since the main goal of fruit is to have animals consume it and making it uncomfortable to eat seems like the opposite of this.
