The Devil's Corkscrew

Illustration of Devil's CorkscrewsFor some time, ranchers in Nebraska knew about these odd formations in the dirt that looked like strange sand corkscrews. 

These ranchers referred to the formations as "Devil's Corkscrews", so whenever paleontologists discovered them in the late 1800s they began calling them Daemonelix. 

Clearly these formations came from some sort of living creature in the distant past, but what could they possibly be? 

This video by PBS Eons digs into the history of these strange formations and uncovers their surprising cause.
