Where Did Snakes Come From?

Snakes are one of those creatures that most people have a pretty strong reaction to. 

These cold-blooded lizard-like animals are loved by some and hated by most, but that hatred is misguided and mainly due to ignorance. 

The vast majority of snakes are harmless and make great contributions to our world and ecosystem. 

One question about these misunderstood critters that persistently seems to come up is where did snakes evolve from? 

The obvious answer would seem to be lizards, but once you start looking at the data that we have collected, that answer is no longer as clear as it once appeared.
