We have used fossils to give us a picture of the distant past and using this data we have been able to speculate about the origins of life. 

One problem with fossils is that they require perfect conditions in order to form and then they must be preserved for billions of years. 

Another problem with fossils is that they require relatively hard pieces of material in order to fossilize, so the earliest life forms would not have made fossils. 

Using a new method, scientists have found evidence of life much earlier that previously thought and maybe even before the Earth had finished forming.
