At first humans only needed to know basic elements of time, like when sundown or sunup was likely to come. 

As time progressed, so did our methods of keeping time and eventually we ended up with the method that we use today. 

This very interesting video by the It's Okay To Be Smart YouTube channel shows us how time has been measured in the past and why it is measured the way that it is now.
