Why Do Cats Have Whiskers?

Cats are strange little creatures when compared to almost any other animal, but they are also very interesting too. 

You have probably noticed that cats have long whiskers coming from their cheeks and eyebrows, but you may not have noticed that they have them on their ankles too! 

What are these whiskers for and why are they located in such strange places?
