The most obvious changes appear to be for comfort and performance reasons. 

In the early days, automobiles were nothing more than a carriage with an engine, then they evolved into a box on a frame. 

In the 1930's automobiles became more sleek and rounded as the exteriors started to be treated more like art. 

The 1950's and 60's saw the rounded shape disappearing into the boxy designs of the 70's and 80's. 

So why did the curvy styles come back in the 90's? Is it for purely aesthetic reasons?
