Layers of sedimentWhen thinking of the history of the Earth, it is easy to forget how massive the time scale actually is. 

To us humans ten thousand years ago seems like an eternity, but to the Earth it is only a small blip on the ruler. 

Geologists are able to look at the layers of sediment that lie beneath our feet to identify different episodes in the history of life and the Earth. 

Using these layers and the artifacts that they find in them, geologists are able to create a Geologic Time Scale.
