Stars Have Family Trees Too!

Josh Welch

IllustrationWe used to think that stars were random balls of gas that formed independently of each other, but our understanding has changed.

Thanks to some recent research, we now believe that stars can be placed on a "family tree" with other nearby stars.

When stars form, they have a unique signature that can be found in other stars that formed from the same gas cloud, kind of like DNA.

This means that stars can have siblings and as you'll learn in the video, our sun has several siblings.
